Samsung?

Is a made up brand word from the Korean words meaning “three” and “star” (ie:  tristar” or “three stars”) which reflect its three multinationals form the core industries: electronics, heavy industries and engineering & construction  (though you’d be very hardpressed to find something Samsung is NOT making or doing business in nowadays.

Background:

The Samsung Group (Korean: 삼성 그룹, Hanja: 三星 그룹  – pronounced  “Sahm sung” (like “ahhh”–NOT “Sam” like “Pam”) is the world’s largest conglomerate (i.e.:  “a multi-industry corporation”, or the combination of two or more firms engaged in entirely different businesses) by revenue, and is headquarted in Seoul, South Korea.

It is also South Korea’s largest chaebol and composed of numerous international affilated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand, including Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest electronics company (and the largest, most successful division of Samsung), Samsung Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders and Samsung Engineering & Construction, a major global construction company.

Samsung has been the world’s most popular consumer electronics brand since 2005 and is probably the most recognized or well-renowned South Korean brand in the world (or maybe Hyundai cars — but I’m going with Samsung).  Samsung Group accounts for more than 20% of South Korea’s total exports and is the leader in many domestic industries, such as the retail, automotive, chemical, and financial, entertainment industries.

Again, its more a challenge to find something Samsung does NOT make or do business in, rather than list what it does.
